Soakaway (hybrid soakaway) at detached house

The term 'hybrid soakaway' was coined at Karup Airbase in 2008.

The hybrid soakaway came into being as a result of problems with what are known as soakawayplastic units, which really saw a breakthrough at the start of the millennium.

Several of these soakaways had been installed at Karup Airbase, and over time people were wondering why they did not work optimally in many instances. The first theory was that air pockets were forming in the soakaways, so preventing the water from flowing in, but digging up the soakaways and inspecting them made it clear that the nonwovens placed around the units had become coated with a layer of dirt 2-3 mm thick on the inside, preventing the water seeping out into the soil.

Thus it has proven to be a bad idea to use non-wovens around soakaway units.
Another problem found during inspection was that one type of soakaway made from welded mesh tubing was having problems at the inlet as leaves and other large contaminants were unable to pass through the mesh, so they accumulated and clogged the inlet.

Thus there was a need to think along new lines, and the notion of a hybrid solution combining old and new was born.

The old stone soakaways were actually good. 
They were very capable of diverting the water to the surrounding soil layers in a natural way.

Advantageously, almost the entire unit volume is air, so these units can contain a lot of water, i.e. provide a tank function.

Combining these properties could provide the solution, and so the first hybrid soakaway was constructed, designed and named by engineer Christian Ramsgaard at Byggestøttecenter Midtjylland at Karup Airbase in close cooperation with pipe manufacturer Wavin A/S and Niels Pedersen, permanent contractor at the airbase. 
This soakaway was to serve an area more than 6,000 m2 in size at Hangar 3.

Wavin A/S had just launched a new unit by the name of Q-bic. These units have the amazing property of forming two parallel pipes when placed one after the other, and these pipes can be inspected and cleaned via a riser pipe. It was natural to use these units, and this cooperation led to this soakaway being established in the autumn of 2008.
