WSUD in Augustenborg, Sweden

The residential area of Augustenborg was built in the 1950s and consists of 3 to 6-storey apartment buildings over an area approximately 20 ha in size. In 1998, housing association MKB entered into partnership with the City of Malmö concerning the revitalisation of Augustenborg with the Eco-city Augustenborg project. The aim was to transform Augustenborg into a socially, environmentally and financially sustainable residential area. One important element in the project was the implementation of a sustainable rainwater system, where an open drainage system has replaced the earlier overloaded sewage system which regularly caused basements to flood. Another innovative element was the active involvement of the residents in concept development, design and implementation.

The ambition of the rainwater system was to manage as much rainwater as possible near to the source in an open rainwater system. The open system comprises 2 kilometres of drop channels, as they are known, 10 dams and a number of open rainwater channels. Some of the techniques used include local infiltration on the lawns and car parks, retention in ponds and areas planned for temporary flooding, and slow transport in swales, channels and ditches.
