Experiences with fascines

A nonwovens around a fascine shall be selected as permeable as possible. But unfortunately, it turns out, at least here in Karup, where I  am responsible for roads and sewers at Karup Airfield,
that whatever is chosen, then the nonwoven turns impermeable after a few years. 
There is simply too much fine dirt in the air, it sits as a layer on the inside, which at the end makes the fascine ineffective.
In spring the fascines are completely green inside of pollen, which also contributes to the clogging.
We have ,at the air base, not made fascines with nonwovens since 2008, and we have only good experiences with “hybridfascines”.
Since we always have sight glass down to the fascines, we can always keep track of how much water there is in the fascine, and it turns out that the fascines are empty shortly after even large rainfall.  
We have a fascine taking water from our parking space and some surrounding roofs. Here I made a water level indicator, so I, above ground, can keep track of how much water there is in the fascine.
It is almost always empty, but after a big cloudburst , the water level in the standpipe was up to the fourth line.
I hurried back to my office to pick up a camera so I could take a picture of it, but when I came back shortly after, the fascine was already empty.  
A “hybridfascine” is a combination of a fascine made with cassettes and an old-fashioned fascines made with stones. Roughly speaking, hybridfascine  consists of a hole,.
Now lay a 30 cm washed stones at the bottom, then cassettes mounted and the hole filled up around the cassettes with washed shingle. We use here 16/32.
On top of it all a two layers of non-woven materials is used before refilled.  
There are several advantages in  doing it this way. First, one can includes the cavity of stonelay, saving about a third of the cassettes  that would have been used by the supplier's charge.
Furthermore the stones do not have to be compressed in the same way as sand will have be, in order not to settle.  
For smaller systems, we also use "Kombifaskinen" which can also be viewed on the website.  
We don’t understand why people continue to recommend nonwovens for fascines. We, at Karup, can´t be the only ones, that have had problems with clogging of the nonwoven.

It is no longer necessary to take abroad to visit WSUDS plants. In the surroundings of Copenhagen there are many possibilities to visit different plants depending on your interest e.g. green roofs, permeable paving’s or rain gardens, see here. Open Hous arrangement

Drainage asphalt

NCC has developed a new asphalt, that will infiltrate the rainwater under cloudburst. The water will infiltrate through the asphalt and be stored in a special developed base, before it will infiltrated in the ground. The drainage asphalt has been tested in Billund Airport since 2012 and has been functioning well. See another example of use of the drainage asphalt here
