Decoupling of road run-off and infiltration in road rain gardens at Karensvej Middelfart

The city of Middelfart are underway with a major project about climate adoption of the neighborhood Kongebro. One of the measures are decoupling of rainwater from the main sewage system

In the neighborhood, surrounding Karensvej the road run off is handled through a natural embossed, lush plants with inspiration from the surrounding forest. It is possible to establish with scattered trees, so the road will have a prosperous and green expression, reminiscent of a forest floor. It is possible, since the roadway on Karensvej partially narrows and the east sidewalk cleared.

The Road rain gardens collects everyday rainwater so it can seep into a twisted forest stream. In a cloudburst situation, rain water runs away along the roadway.

All road run off in the area is decoupled from the sewer system, so all rainwater that falls on the roads, is handled on the surface, either in trenches or in road rain gardens along the roadside. The overflow from the road rain garden are led to the “Activity Forest” where it can be stored and the lead to the river” Langedam” and then into the Little Belt.

Work is ongoing and should be completed at the end of 2016.
