Detached house with lawn and rain garden infiltration (Brøndby 8)

The owner has chosen to manage all rainwater on the surface in a rainwater garden and a natural hollow in the lawn.

The rainwater from the roof area on the north side of the house is fed via a trench in a pebble mosaic to a natural hollow in the lawn, where the water infiltrates (photos 1, 2 and 3). The hollow has an overflow to the lawn during extreme rainwater events.

The rainwater from the roof area from the remaining part of the house is fed via an existing footpath to a rain garden with an overflow to a soakaway (photos 4, 5 and 6). The rain garden is positioned next to the footpath, where a small recess in the path feeds the water on to the garden.

The residential road Lindevang in Brøndby Strand forms a starting point for a demonstration project. 15 homeowners have diverted their rainwater from the community sewage system in order to relieve the load on the sewage system with a combination of rainwater gardens, hollows in lawns and soakaways.

The purpose of the project is to develop solutions in respect of civil engineering and regulatory procedures, and also to expand on experience.

This project is part of a collective project in which the road runoff from Lindevang will also be diverted and a Plan B solution for the road and gardens is being examined.

The project is designed for a 5-year rainwater event. A total of approx. 2,200 m2 of roof surface area has been diverted.

"Together with the other initiatives in the area, the project will hopefully allow us to avoid having to extend our sewer systems as much as we would have had to have done otherwise. At the same time, it is reasonable for people to get something out of the rainwater locally instead of sending it all the way here to the waste treatment plant," says project manager Søren Hansen, Spildevandscenter Avedøre.
